Garajistanbul explains Kassas as such:
In pre-Islam era there were men called Kassas in Istanbul along with many other story-tellers and troubadours. They carry on the tradition of verbal narration up until today.
Our inspiration for this play is the street vendors of Istanbul whose bodies are the one and the same thing with their stores. These people are sometimes good story-tellers who make up stories for the commodities they sell. They are street-wise people and they know the streets and districts of Istanbul very well. They belong to the streets and they carry on a peculiar culture. Street-vendors are our partners in this play.
This experience is a step to get acquainted with unwritten rules of the city as one gets to understand the story which vendor is telling, and then to sympathize with the vendor. The main axis of the project is to try to understand this new world in which the vendor turns out to be an actor and the actor becomes a vendor. |
